'If 100k filing fee is expensive to pay, you’re not serious to lead Ghana' – Political Analyst jabs

Sep 17, 2020

A political Analyst,Mr Boakye Yiadom has opined that any Presidential aspirant who cannot afford to pay the GHC100,000 filing fee set by the Electoral Commission of Ghana for the 2020 polls is not ready to lead the country.

According to him, the money in question is not exorbitant for presidential candidate willing to lead to pay. He even yelled for more to be paid.

At the Commission's "Let The Citizen Know" press conference in Accra on Monday, September 14, the EC Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensa said individuals or parties willing to contest the elections must first make a deposit of the aforementioned amount in a form of a bankers draft to the Commission after downloading, filling and submitting their forms within 5 days.

"The Presidential Candidate will be required to deposit an amount of Ghc 100,000 in a form of a Bankers draft to the Commission, Parliamentary Candidates will be required to deposit Ghc 10,000 in a form of a Bankers draft as well. We wish all candidates for both presidential and parliamentary elections well, we trust that the nomination process will be efficient, seemless and orderly . . ." she said.

A section of the Ghanaians have taken to social media to criticise the fee set by the Electoral Commission (EC) as the filing fee for the 2020 presidential candidates.

But reacting to the issue in an interview with Nana Ampratwum on Omanbapa Morning Show on Silver FM, the Mr. Boakye Yiadom said;

''Any serious Presidential candidate or party must be able to honour this filing fee with a blink of an eye''

''If one cannot afford to pay a 100K filing to contest for Presidential seat then I cannot see the motive behind your zeal for presidency''

''The seat is not a joke so one must be ready for it and anything that comes with it''

Mr. Boakye Yiadom opposed the idea of some people calling for state funding of a political party.

He admonished against the channeling of funds meant for constructing roads and building classroom blocks to fund political parties.

He unearthed how a party can fund for itself without support from the state or from an external source
