The world recognizes Akufo Addo's Presidency even if NDC rejects his victory - Spio-Garbrah

Jan 14, 2021

Former Trade and Industry Minister in the erstwhile Mahama government, Dr Ekow Spio-Garbrah has indicated that even if the opposition National Democratic Congress  (NDC) rejects Akufo Addo's victory as President, leaders the world over do recognise him as the constitutionally elected President of the West African State.

Dr Spio-Garbrah was speaking in an interview with SilverNews on Silver FM 98.3mhz yesterday evening on post election issues and matters arising when he made these remarks.

According to the longtime presidential hopeful, ''the NDC's position not to recognize H.E Akufo-Addo as president is just a talk and cannot refute Nana Addo's victory, the right option is to challenge the  election results in the Supreme Court as the party has done''

''This is because the President was sworn in on January 7, 2021 in the presence of Rt Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin, the speaker of parliament, together with NDC MPs, NPP MPs, Chief Justice and some foreign leaders''

“In the mean time Ghana has a constitutionally elected President...until the Supreme Court proves otherwise after a verdict for our petition, Ghana has a president!” he told SilverNEWS

On 9 December, the Electoral Commission announced that incumbent Akufo-Addo, flagbearer for the centre-right New Patriotic Party, had won 51.6% of the votes in the presidential contest, about half of the million vote margin that brought him victory in 2016 (when he got 53.7% of the votes)..

The Commission announced that Mahama obtained 47.4% of the total.

The NDC rejected the results of the 7 December polls, alleging fraud and had since filed a petition at the Supreme Court to challenge President Akufo Addo's victory in this month's election.
