Otumfuo charges IGP to fix security challenges before December 7 elections

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged the Police Administration to step up their efforts to ensure peace in the country, before, during and after the December 7 Election.

The Asantehene made these remarks when the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Oppong Boanuh called on him at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to solicit his support to ensure peaceful elections.

He used the opportunity to urge the Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh to improve general security in the country since Ghanaians have entrusted their safety, National Peace and Security into the hands of the Police Service.

“The peace of the elections is in your hands,” the king of the Asante Kingdom said in local language Twi.

The Asantehene, advised the police to strive to work to calm down tensions and ensure that misunderstandings and small issues did not degenerate into violence.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu, reiterated the call on losing political parties to accept defeat in good faith and resort to law courts if they suspected foul play.


“If a political party loses an election, its supporters are not supposed to bring chaos into the country.

“They should wait for their time to win, or if in so much doubt, they can take the matter to court for peaceful settlement”, he stressed.

The IGP is in the Ashanti Region to audit the operational capacity of the Regional Command and to listen to the officers at a durbar of all ranks.

He is also to assess the Command’s Operational Preparedness for the December 7 General Election, as well as interact with his counterparts in the other security services.

The IGP also inspected a simulation exercise organized by the Regional Police Command at the Police Training School in Patasi, Kumasi to demonstrate to the public the preparedness of the police to handle any misfortune during the election’s day.

Accompanying the IGP were; COP Mr George Alex Mensah Director-General of Police Services, COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo- Danquah(Mrs) Director-General Welfare, COP Kwaku Boadu-Peprah Director-General Operations and Chief Staff Officer ACP Joseph Owusu-Ansah.
